About the Farmy
Springtail Farmy is a small operation dedicated to one thing: raising the toughest, most productive springtail cultures we can for the bioactive hobby.
Springtails (order Collembola) are the unsung heroes of a healthy vivarium. This tiny-but-mighty cleanup crew breaks down mold, waste, and decaying matter so your plants and animals thrive. We breed ours in-house and ship them as active, established colonies, ready to assemble in your enclosure.
A bioactive enclosure works because its cleanup crew never stops. Rather than manually scraping mold or waste out of a tank, keepers stock a live janitorial team of springtails, and often isopods, that quietly process it into harmless byproduct around the clock. Springtails handle the microscopic side of that job — fungal growth, biofilm, and decaying leaf litter — which is why nearly every dart frog, reptile, and planted terrarium setup includes them from day one.
We currently raise Asian Orange Springtails, with Lilac Purple Springtails regrouping for the next wave and Red Springtails in basic training. New to keeping them? Our field guides cover what to expect on arrival, care, and troubleshooting. Got a question or a special request? We'd love to hear from you.
Field guides
Just received an order? Start with what to expect on arrival.
- What to expect on arrival — What's in the box when your springtail culture arrives, why they may look still, and exactly what to do in the first hour and first day.
- Springtails 101 — What springtails (Collembola) are, how they jump, what they eat, and why they're the clean-up crew of choice for terrariums and vivariums.
- Keeping a culture — Set up and maintain a springtail culture: container, substrate, moisture, feeding, harvesting and splitting, with a simple setup diagram.
- Adding them to an enclosure — How to seed springtails into a terrarium, vivarium or isopod bin: where to put them, how many, and how long until they're established.
- Troubleshooting — Fix common springtail culture problems: mold, a population crash, bad smells, and telling springtails apart from mites and fungus gnats.
- FAQ — Quick answers about springtails: are they safe, what do they eat, how fast they breed, why they arrive in a small container, and more.
